Super senior golfers ahead by two-shots
THE TRINIDAD and Tobago tandem of Patrick Suraj and Asraph Ali hold a two-shot lead over Puerto Rico, in the super seniors category, entering today’s final day of the 48th Caribbean Senior Amateur Golf Championships, at the Lucayan Golf and Country Club, Freeport, Bahamas. Suraj and Ali, who began yesterday’s round in second spot, teamed up for a score of 69 to overtake the Puerto Ricans, who made 73. With the Higgs and Higgs Trophy clearly in their sights, the TT duo have a total of 210, with Puerto Rico on 212 and hosts Bahamas on 215. But Barbados’ men are virtually assured of the prestigious Hoerman Cup as the TT quartet of Simon Merry (75), Carlos ‘Sexy’ Baynes (77), Dion Gonsalves (80) and Ben Martin (86) all had horrendous rounds on the greens.
The Bajans, who have led from the outset, hold a comfortable six-point lead over Puerto Rico - 661 to the Puerto Ricans’ 669 with TT on 672. The TT women are also out of the reckoning for the George Teale Trophy, after they returned a score of 162 — Diana Torry hitting 79, sister Michelle 83 and Tracey Clarke 89. Bahamas have a comfortable lead with 472, with Puerto Rico 479, Jamaica 485 and TT 493 trailing. In the Seniors Division, the pair of Ray Roberts and Barry Ferdinand moved one notch to fifth with a score of 218, after shooting 73 yesterday. There is a three-way tie for first, in the race for the Francis, Steele-Perkins Cup — hosts Bahamas, Cayman Islands and Puerto Rico — with 214 followed by Dominican Republic 217. And, in the mid-amateur division, the TT twosome of Allan Clayton and Robert Costelloe also climbed one spot, from ninth to eighth with 496, following a score of 164 yesterday. Puerto Rico are well ahead of the pack with 457, with Dominican Republic and Jamaica sharing second with 467.
