Windies recall Dillon, Browne for ICC Trophy
Barbados wicket-keeper Courtney Browne, who last represented the West Indies in 2001, has won a recall for the ICC Champions Trophy One-Day international cricket tournament. This report was filed yesterday on the Caribbeancricket.com website. Browne, who averages 12.46 in 28 ODIs for the West Indies, replaces Ridley Jacobs in a move that signals a rapid departure from the previous policy of selecting young, untested players. A captain was not named and the WICB plan to hold a teleconference today to ratify the selectors’ recommendation, a strong hint that Browne may replace Brian Lara as captain.
Carlton Baugh, who has served as back-up to Ridley Jacobs since last year, was also left out of the ICC Champions trophy squad. Fast bowler Merv Dillon was also included in the squad, as was opener Wavell Hinds. Dillon’s inclusion comes at the expense of Ravi Rampaul and Tino Best (both injured) and Darren Sammy, who were all in the West Indies squad for the recent NatWest triangular tournament in England. Opener Devon Smith was also dropped to make way for Hinds. Ian Bradshaw and Ricardo Powell, regarded by the selectors as one-day specialists, both return to the ODI squad.
FULL SQUAD: Ian Bradshaw, Courtney Browne, Shiv Chanderpaul, Corey Collymore, Merv Dillon, Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Sylvester Joseph, Brian Lara, Jermaine Lawson, Ricardo Powell, Ramnaresh Sarwan, and Dwayne Smith.
