Couple arrested on arms, ammo charges

A couple was arrested at their Tabaquite home yesterday following the seizure of a shotgun, two trap-guns, four rounds of 12-gauge cartridges and a quantity of dried marijuana. The couple was arrested and the seizure made at about 3 am when a party of officers led by Insp  Hubert Kirk and acting Sgt Anjit Persad including PCS Kirk Shepherd, Charles Barrow,  Nirie Joseph, Simeon Guelmo and WPC Jacklyn Gustav and others, surrounded the couple’s house and executed a search warrant. The 40-year-old man and his 38-year-old wife were taken to the Chaguanas CID and charged  with firearm and illegal drug offences. Sometime later, the same  party arrested a 21-year-old man of Enterprise who was wanted for a number of robberies  and other crimes in the Central  division.

The party then went to Bhagna Trace, where they arrested a 23-year-old man who was in the process of robbing another man. Seven other persons were also arrested on outstanding  warrants between last week Friday and yesterday. Also nine illegal guns were seized. The exercise formed part of the aggressive anti-crime initiative organised by Commissioner of Police Trevor Paul. The recent seizure of these illegal guns has put the police Central Division as the leading division in the seizure of firearms since CoP Paul’s directive to all police divisions to aggressively pursue a campaign of removing guns from the hand of criminal elements. Guns have been identified as the  weapon of choice to carry out some of the most gruesome  murders in the country.
