We must hit the criminals first
THE EDITOR: The country now has a better chance at controlling the crime situation now that the Police think of themselves as targets for criminals. It is unfortunate that it took the death of Mr Robinson’s bodyguard to signal what will undoubtedly be a new look at the problem. The Police will not wait for the criminals to come to them. They will now take the battle to the criminals. The solution to the crime problems lies in this approach. We the citizens have had for a long time to hide ourselves from criminals. The burglar bars did not work. The fierce pitbulls did not work. Armed guards did not work. Anaconda and variations of it did not work. Self imposed curfews did not work. These strategies couldn’t work because they attempted to hide or protect the law-abiding citizens from the criminals.
We were actually running and hiding from criminals. Of more importance the political system tried to demonstrate how the law could be used to protect the criminals. The rights of the criminals were more important than the rights of the law abiding citizens who were in the majority. George Bush and the late Commissioner Burroughs each had something to teach us. You do not wait for the criminal to come to you. You take the kind of action that would put the criminal on the run. You go after the criminal and hit him first. Some mistakes would be made in the process. The concept of collateral damage is not new to us. If President George Bush is returned to power it will be because of this philosophy. No minority should determine how the majority lives and if a minority threatens, then make sure to hit first. The Police now feel like us. The criminal elements should now be made to feel like us.
