Defence Force b-ballers in N/Zone play-offs
Defence Force picked up their 12th win from 14 matches when they defeated oDetour Shak Attack 85-70. The victory came as the top four teams in the First Division came up against each other on Monday evening in North Zone Basketball League action at the St Paul’s Street Sport Facility in Port-of-Spain. Kevin Robertson, with 19 points led the Defence Force scoring and was helped by Steven Lewis (17 points eight assists and six rebounds), Wilt Vincent (14 points and seven rebounds) and Peter Lewis (11 points). The Army basketballers finished on 26 points and become the first team in the division to advance to the play-offs. In a bid to better their chances of advancing from fourth placed on 20 points, Shak Attack were spurred on by Terrance Mayers with 15 points.
Also making contributions to the effort were Reynold Hospedales (13 points) and Simon Moreno and Lyle Worrell with 10 points each. National Flour Mills (NFM) stuck to their second position in the First Division standings with a 85-71 win over third placed Royal Extra Lions in the second match of the double header on Monday. Lions who along with Shak Attack are on 20 points after 12 matches made a strong case for upping their standing. Frank Watson scored 21 points, Barry Sandy put in 15 and Ronald Hernandez had 12 and held nine rebounds. NFM, who went into the match with nine wins one more than the Lions, opted for more of a team game and Shorn Edwards with 14 points, two assists and four rebounds was their leading scorer. They also got 13 points each from Ashley Bynoe, who also had three rebounds; and Jason Delisle with four rebounds and two assists. It was enough for their tenth win.
