Black power movement transformed our society

THE EDITOR: I have always left to wonder why we Trinidadians focus on things that have produced no positive results while ignoring events that with the passing of time have been responsible for the creation of an outstanding achievement. While recalling the July 27, 1990 with perpetual regularity few seem to honour the black power movement of the 70’s which produced profound benefits for thousands of our citizens. I would have thought that this social upheaval which transformed our society elevating it to a high consciousness would receive greater consideration than the July 27 tragedy.

That the events of the 70’s could have occurred with no loss of life is in itself a magnificent achievement. How many of us I wonder appreciated what took place here? I will not occupy your reader’s time further. Suffice it is for me to say that I unequivocally support Mr Eric Esdelle from Carapichaima in your Newsday dated August 9, recommending that the sower of the seed, if I may so phrase it, Mr Makandal Daaga be awarded this nation’s highest honour, the Trinity Cross.
