Vagrants sleeping in Couva market
THE EDITOR: Three vagrants have taken up residence in the Couva Market and it seems that the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation officials are afraid of them. Late into Sunday morning this week, one of them arose from his bed on one of the stalls, a filthy piece of sponge foam which he had tossed there the night before. These people sleep on the stalls where foodstuff is sold the next day — a highly unsanitary practice which should be stopped immediately. This is the price we pay for not doing things properly. Remember the “temporary” market was a rush job before the 2000 elections to create a promenade which had become the national trend after Brian Lara got Independence Square spruced up and named after him following his record breaking 501 and 375 not out world records.
The Couva promenade is named after the late great West Indies spin bowler Inshan Ali who already had his home ground named after him in Preysal, hree miles away. This market is built above WASA’s 54 inch mains and NGC’s gas lines and has been expanding northwards as more and more vendors come in to ply their trade. The squalid shacks which littered the old site are back as vendors fight for space. Add to this filthy vagrants sleeping and drooling on the stalls and soon enough we will be back to square one. The officials of the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corpaortion should, if they are afraid of these people, get the nearby police to evict these vagrants from the market post haste!
