Under-17 footballers crush Bahamas 14-1
FACING an opposiion totally out of their depth in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Group “A” Under-17 qualifiers, Trinidad and Tobago crushed Bahamas 14-1 at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet on Friday night. Only a sparse crowd of approximately 500 witnessed the one-sided affair — the second match of a double-header — after Barbados remained in contention for the top spot with a 3-0 triumph over St Lucia. Dwayne Mars (61st), Mario Harte (75th) and Lorenzo Joseph (90th) were the goalscorers for the Bajans who, like their hosts, have won their two matches to date in the tournament.
Today’s matchup between TT and Barbados, at 6 pm, (following the Bahamas-St Lucia contest) will decide who will face Cuba in the second round, with TT needing only a draw to progress to the home-and-away qualifier. TT coach Nigel Grovesnor noted on Friday that his team played better than they did in our first match (against St Lucia on Wednesday). “I expected (the players) to be a little more relaxed (on Friday). They really tried to play the correct (type of) football,” he said.
On Friday the hosts were led to victory by a beavertrick from Lester Peltier (9th, 26th, 66th, 74th and 84th), Nyron Orr (4th), Silas Spann (20th), Carlton Hughes (22nd, 43rd), Shastri Spencer (58th), Kyle McIvor (71st, 88th), Qian Grovenor (80th), and Keron Ross (90th).
Cameron Hepple pulled one back for the Bahamas.
