Sugar Mike clocks 59.97 for 1000m

SUGAR MIKE sent a stark message to all challengers for the Sagicor Independence Cup with a bullet gallop at Santa Rosa Park, Arima, yesterday morning. The 2003 “Horse of the Year” who only recently humped 60.5 kilos and easily beat his field in the President’s Cup over 2000 metres, lit up the morning with his gallop over 1000 metres timed in 59.97 seconds, showing he is ready for all in the 1850 metres race on the turf course, including the two Barbados runners.

Also showing much sparkle yesterday was Dottie’s Way who holds the  Independence Cup engagement, clocking 1:01.70 for his solo spin over the same trip. Invincibility who along with Fantastic Story will form trainer Grant Lourenco three-pronged attack in the Grade One event, galloped over 600 metres in 35.53 seconds. Barbadian runners Foxcote and Lion Country, scheduled to arrive on Friday  are now expected to fly in tomorrow.

Murphy’s Law also seemed happy with the wet ground conditions on the morning, as the daughter of Researching/Bora Bora which raced in the colours of late trainer Andrew Dulal-Whitway recently, drilled the last 800 metres of the sand course in 49.88 seconds. The chestnut three-year-old, who will be conditioned by Chester Roberts for the Santa Rosa Classic on the holiday card next Tuesday, saw his excellent clocking bettered by American import Gold Conveyor, who completed his spin in 49.18 seconds to be best for the distance.
