Shak Attack surprise D/Force b-ballers
DETOUR Shak Attack surprised Defence Force 92-74 in Game Two of their North Zone Basketball Championship semi-final at the St Paul’s Street Multi-Purpose Facility to level the best-of-three series 1-1. The Army-Coast Guard men held a four-point advantage at the end of the third quarter of Thursday night’s match, but a determined last gasp rally led by Peter Lewis who scored 16 points, swept Shak Attack to victory. After trailing 21-17 at the end of the first quarter, Defence Force surged into a 37-25 lead at the half-time break, limiting the Shak Attak to just four points in the second period. But Lewis, and brother Steven who had 10 points along with Mervyn Headley who also got 10 points, led a resolute fightback outscoring the Army-Coast Guard men 27-19 in the third on their way to their blowout victory.
Defence Force had no answer for Shak Attack’s swarming defence in the final stanza, and they were restricted to 19 points while the winners pulled away scoring a massive 40. Simon Morgan had 23 points, Terrance Mayers 18 including four three-pointers, five rebounds and four blocked shots, and Virgil Fraser 13 and seven boards for Defence Force. Despite Paula Ross exploding for 33 points and adding four rebounds, Courts Horizon blew out Trailblazers 84-61. Horizon led at all the stops 29-20, 47-31, 68-43 behind 24 points nine boards and nine assists from ex-WNBA player Pietra Gay. Chezelle Griffith added 22 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots, while Rachael Thompson-King had 18 points. Candice Nelson slotted in 11 points and ripped down 12 rebounds and Janeva Edwards scored 10 points for Trailblazers.
