Why Deputy PM is essential
THE EDITOR: It’s about time that the PNM sorts out the situation over the acting Prime Ministership. It is wrong to continue to appoint someone to act as Prime Minister who clearly does not qualify in more ways than one. The constitution is clear; the Prime Minister of this country must come from membership of the Lower House. The ongoing appointment of Mrs Yuille-Williams has not been challenged because it appears to be convenient to both major parties. However, the country must not be saddled by the adverse consequences of actions which are perpetrated for no other reason than internal party politics and posturing. The interests of the country are clearly not paramount. The PM’s current incapacity is a case in point. The country is uncertain of the extent of his illness and information being provided is at best scant.
In the event that the PM is unable to continue his duties, the country (not to mention the party) will be in an awkward mess. Even if he returns to his desk, his complaint suggests that his workload will have to be well managed and perhaps reduced. The PNM should appoint a proper deputy PM to assist the PM with his responsibilities. It cannot be Senator Yuille-Williams. Her record of management in her ministry is not impressive and that is being charitable. There are also questions about her administrative style. She has three other ministers in her ministry and they are used as messengers. So sort it out PNM. Elections are two years away. We want the party that Eric Williams built and the country deserves greater respect.
