Shocking dogs to death is horrid
THE EDITOR: I am kindly requesting that you publish this letter concerning the issue of Mr Hikmet Ahamad’s anti-electrocution protest of dogs. I fully support Mr Ahamad’s view that animals should not be put to sleep by electrocution. I believe that animals are better than people. That may be an extreme view to many but nonetheless it is my view. Some people have a passion for children, others for the disabled or the elderly. Mine is obvious. Dumb animals (and I am referring particularly to the domesticated dogs and cats which are popular pets) should be treated with love, care and respect. As a teacher, I have taught many generations of students to display their values/qualities towards animals.
It is truly disheartening and extremely sad to hear of the relevant persons at City Corporation claiming that they will not be intimidated by Mr Ahamad and his fight against electrocution. I believe that the issue is not about Mr Ahamad’s intimidation but simply one of his genuine concerns for the proper treatment of all animals in this country. I earnestly hope that this horrid method of electrocution is totally disbanded. Quite a number of individuals in our society are void or are fast losing the value of empathy (in this case, putting oneself in the “shoes” of these animals). To those people who treat their animals in the manner in which they should be treated, I highly commend you. To the others who do not do so, I urge you to reflect on your attitude towards animals and let humanitarianism be visible.
We also need to teach and show children humanitarianism. If this is not done, monsters are created. In the future, I am looking forward to seeing that laws for the protection of animals and for the prevention of cruelty to them are passed and enforced. Let us all work together (veterinarians and others who support this cause) with love and minimum dissension to accomplish the goal of creating a humane society towards animals. I applaud your newspaper for featuring Mr Ahamad’s article sometime ago on the issue of animal treatment. I would be extremely grateful if you publish my letter to support this animal endeavour.
