Trinidad was named long before Hindus came
THE EDITOR: It is difficult to understand sections of the Hindu community who are protesting against the Trinity Cross. History tells us that when Christopher Columbus sighted the three peaks of the Southern Range: he saw it as “a good omen” and named this land of ours “La Trinidad” that is Portuguese for “The Trinity.” Trinidad was named after The Most Holy Trinity which is very sacred to Christians. This was way back in 1492, over 500 years ago, long before Hindus reached these shores. For 500 years this has been accepted and respected.
However we live in an age of protest, when a Police Commissioner cannot even recall his men from leave without a protest. Such actions could not have happened a few years ago. However if sections of the Hindu community have a problem with “The Cross” as a symbol of Christianity, then I believe they should be accommodated. Make the award The Trinity Star or some appropriate symbol. If on the other hand they are protesting the name Trinity or Trinidad, a name that was given to this blessed land in honour of the Most Holy Trinity over 500 years ago, then I honestly believe they must ask themselves if they are in fact living in the wrong country.
