Two murder suspects among 29 held in police raids

Two murder suspects were among 29 persons arrested in an exercise carried out on Friday night by officers of the Port-of-Spain CID, Homicide and Court and Process. The suspects ages 32 and 29 were detained for the murder of Roger Haynes, who was gunned down while driving his car at St Barb’s on July 29. Reports revealed that the two suspects were arrested in Laventille by homicide officers. Up until yesterday they were being questioned about the murder.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Geoffrey Hender-son, will be consulted on the matter today. During the same exercise, ten persons wanted for a series of robberies along the East/West corridor were arrested and are expected to be placed on identification parades. Others were held for housebreaking and larceny and two stolen cars were recovered. The exercise started around 6 pm on Friday and ended at 6 am yesterday. It was led by Snr Supt Errol Denoon and acting Insp Sahadeo Singh. The raids form part of the aggressive anti-crime initiative organised by Police Commissioner Trevor Paul. The exercises are aimed at dealing with the spiralling crime rate and the spate of lawlessness in the country.
