Big cash prize in Super Cup netball

OVER $30,000 in prize money will be at stake in the inaugural NASMA Enterprises-sponsored Netball Super Cup Championships which begins on September 18. The tournament gets underway with a parade of teams from 4 pm, to be followed by a double-header. According to organiser Selwyn Melville, ten teams have been invited to contest the championships which will be played off at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo. The winners will pocket $10,000, the coveted Super Cup and gold medals. This series will mark the first time there will be cash prizes in a local netball championship. The contest, expected to attract the best teams in Trinidad and Tobago will be  run with the blessing of the Trinidad and Tobago Netball Association. It will involve one team from sister-island Tobago, Canaan/Bon Accord United (C&B United) who will play their matches at weekends.


Other invited teams are Port-of-Spain Netball League champions Police, Defence Force, Mucurapo Ex-Pupils, CFC, Malta Carib Senators, Zenith, Government Printery, San Juan Jabloteh and Soul City. Teams will be sub-divided into two groups of five with Defence Force, CFC, Zenith, Soul City and Government Printery comprising Group One, while Police, Mucurapo Ex-Pupils, C&B United, Jabloteh, and Malta Carib Senators make up Group Two. Competition rules stipulate each team has the option of including two male players, but must also include at least two women players Under-21 years old. Winners of each group, following a round-robin series, will play for the $10,000 winner’s purse in a best-of-three match series, with the runners-up meeting for the third and fourth prize money. There will also be prizes for outstanding players, and fans will not be left out. The one-month championships is scheduled to close on October 17.
