Glenn comes off bench to hit MetroStars winner
EAST RUTHERFORD: Trinidad and Tobago’s Cornell Glen, emerged from a lean spell with a winning goal on Saturday night as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars logged a come-from-behind 3-2 football win over the New England Revs at Giants Stadium. The MetroStars erased an early 2-0 deficit to defeat the New England Revolution, with Glen’s winner coming in the 68th minute, just five minutes after he had come off the substitutes’ bench to replace Jamaican forward Fabian Taylor. The Metros are now within a point of first place in the East while leaving the Revs’ season on the brink of disaster. The Revs, who had Grenada’s Shalrie Joseph in their line-up and TT’s Avery John on as 37th minute substitute, were 2-0 up after 14 minutes through early goals from Pat Noonan and Taylor Twellman.
But Mike Magee pulled a goal back for the Metros in the 31st minute from the penalty and they drew level just before half-time when Chris Leitch chipped a pass inside from the left that was just out of an advancing Taylor’s control, but after a slight touch from the Jamaican, the ball continued across and fell for Eddie Gaven to score neatly with a firm right foot shot. The MetroStars found an opening through a counter-attack for the game-winner in the 68th minute. Playing near midfield, John Wolyniec took a pass from Pablo Brenes and sent a long ball ahead to Glen. Having scored only once in 10 outings before the match, Glen ran through a wide open Revolution defence and placed an accurate left-footer beyond Matt Reis for the game’s deciding goal.
Elsewhere, goals from Sasha Victorine and substitute Arturo Torres handed Steve Sampson a crucial first win in three matches as a professional manager in front of a sold-out home crowd, as the Los Angeles Galaxy claimed another hard-fought 2-1 victory with in-state rival San Jose Earthquakes at The Home Depot Centre. Sasha Victorine sent LA ahead in the 36th minute and Jamaica international Tyrone Marshall assisted on a second goal that extended the lead in the 75th minute. Marshall’s forward pass out of midfield found Peter Vagenas and his well-weighted though pass to the edge of the area found the onrushing Arturo Torres, who slotted a low shot just inside Pat Onstad’s far post for his first MLS goal. Ronnie Ekelund scored for San Jose 13 minutes from the end, but LA remained strong for the victory. (CMC)
