They should be ‘GOPIO Awards’
THE EDITOR: Well I declare: Indians in the country are now presenting their own National Awards — The order of Trinidad and Tobago. Question: How many Indians do we have in Trinidad and Tobago? Maybe 200??? I know that we have Trinidadians of Indian descent who according to Sat Maharaj represent 40 percent of the population (Indo-Trinidadians.) Indian national awards can only be given by the Government of India and that Government would hardly issue an award called “The Order of Trinidad and Tobago.”
The proposed award would have to be a private organisation award like say “The GOPIO Awards.” and it cannot be called “The Order of Trinidad and Tobago” but the “Order of GOPIO.” All over the world private organisations give out awards which are seen as private awards which do not pretend to be national awards.
