Tigers beaten; Naps rout Mayaro 8-1

REIGNING North Zone champs St Anthony’s were beaten 3-2 by Mucurapo while, in the south, defending champions Naparima routed Mayaro 8-1 as action continued yesterday in the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL). Richard Roy broke the hearts of “The Tigers”, St Anthony’s fans when he found the back of the net in second half stoppage time, to give Mucurapo their second straight of the season. Fatima remained the other team in the North with a 100 percent record after they whipped St Mary’s 3-0 at the St Mary’s Ground. QRC registered a 3-1 triumph over Morvant/Laventille at the QRC Ground while Malick strolled past Tranquility 3-0 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. With their crushing of Mayaro at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, Naps jumped to the top of the table with four points, the same as Moruga who cruised past Pleasantville 3-0 at Moruga.


Adisa Connell got a double for Naps, with Kern Robinson, Deverne Wallace, Kern Peters, Andrew Bailey and the Lara twins Dezi and Kezi got the others. Vessigny earned their first win, edging Princes Town 1-0 at Mahaica Oval courtesy of a strike of Tsion Thomas, and St Benedict’s were held to their second draw in as many matches, 1-1 against Fyzabad at Fyzabad. Tobago Zone action will commence today with defending champs Signal Hill opposing arch-rivals Scarborough in the feature match at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet from 4 pm. Bishop’s and Roxborough will face off in the earlier matchup at 2 pm. And a full round of matches in the East Zone will be played from 4 pm —  Arima host Valencia at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar; El Dorado welcome San Juan to their home ground in Tunapuna; St Augustine meet Barataria at St Augustine and leaders St George’s square off against Hillview at the Marvin Lee Stadium.
