Fatal accident in Debe
WHEN Kenrick Ramkhelawan’s car slammed into an overloaded three-tonne truck, which was reportedly carrying 11 people, it was he who sustained the brunt of the injuries. Ramkhelawan, driving a car he purchased almost a month ago, died from multiple injuries sustained in the head-on collision. However, all of the 11 persons travelling in the Kia truck escaped with minor scratches and bruises. Relatives of the 43-year-old father of two said he bled for over 90 minutes trapped in his car before ambulance and fire services arrived at the scene Sunday night. Police said Ramkhelawan’s left leg was almost ripped off in the accident and this was the major wound from which he bled to death. “The whole car was covered in blood. Like he bled out in the car,” grieving father Suedath Ramkhelawan said. “Maybe if he got out of the vehicle in time he might have been alive still,” cousin Bharat Deolal added.
The accident occurred around 8.50 pm while Ramkhelawan, was driving north along SS Erin Road and the truck was travelling in the opposite direction. Police reports indicate that Ramkhelawan swerved into the pathway of the truck and collided head-on. Some of the persons riding in the open tray fell onto the roadway, but none were seriously injured. Relatives said the deceased had gone out after he dropped his wife Sharda and two sons, at home after praying at a Hindu Temple. His father said he was hard working, having always tried to make ends meet for his family. “He used to work Caroni, but since it closed down he had kept himself busy to maintain his family. He worked construction, labour or anything else because he had two boys to take care of.” San Fernando Traffic Police are continuing investigations.
