Murray hails WI return to the top
EX-WEST INDIES vice-captain and wicketkeeper Deryck Murray described yesterday’s ICC Trophy victory as a “West Indies victory.” Murray, who with fastbowler Andy Roberts lifted West Indies from a similar position to victory over Pakistan in the 1975 World Cup final said he felt “really pleased” for the team. “It has been a long time waiting for something to celebrate,” the top level executive said.
Murray said he heard current West Indies skipper Brian Lara refer to the 1975 match, and said: “It is nice to be remembered. If that was the thing to inspire and motivate the team I am very happy.” He said watching the match on television he felt good to see the fightback and the celebration which followed. Murray said: “It was truly a West Indies victory. That’s what West Indies cricket does for all of us.”
