Fatima, Magnolia crowned Colfire champs
FATIMA edged Malvern 5-4 in a thriller at the Chinese Association Hall, St Ann’s to wrest the Colfire Chinese Invitational Indoor Hockey title. For Malvern, it was a disappointing night as they were beaten in three finals, including the women and Boys Under-21s. A Dean Nieves double powered the Fatima team to victory in Saturday night’s men Open Division final. Colin Young, “Most Valuable Player” Alan Young and Shane Newallo scored the other goals for the winners, while Malvern got a goal each from Albert Marcano, Wayne Leggerton, Anthony Marcano and Colin Byron.
And “Most Valuable Player” Stacey Siu Butt hit the backboard four times to carry Carib Magnolia to a 10-5 victory over Malvern to take the women crown. Nicky Bradshaw scored a hat-trick, Alicia Waithe two and Gaye-Ann Nieves got the other goal for the winning team. Cecile Assam-Loren and Sherlan Cabralis both scored doubles and Rosann Reyes got the other goal for the Malvernites. Notre Dame were winners of the Over-35 title after beating Queen’s Park 6-3 in the final, while Paragon took both the Boys and Girls Under-21 crown. Chinese won the men’s knockout and Venture took the women’s category, while Susan Gomes was named Umpires Choice. St Anthony’s won the Boys Under-16 title and Holy Name the Girls Division in the Schools Category, while Providence (Girls) and Chinese (Boys) got the Under-21 crowns.
