Laventille man freed of attempted murder

A LAVENTILLE man was yesterday acquitted of one count of attempted murder and two counts of wounding with intent. This came on the heels of the dismissal two days ago of the same charges faced by another man, with whom the acquitted man had been jointly charged. The nine-member jury took less than an hour to return a not guilty verdict in favour of Stanley Henry of Febeau Village, Laventille. The other man, Thurston Nedd, also of Febeau Village, was discharged Monday when the State, represented by Jeron Joseph and Joy Balkaran, conceded that the evidence against him was unsatisfactory.

The two men were before Madame Justice Paula Mae Weekes at the Port-of-Spain Second Criminal Court charged with attempting to murder PC Irwin Roberts and wounding Roberts and PC Marvin Hewitt with the intent to do grievous bodily harm. Nedd, Henry and three other men had allegedly stormed the San Juan Police Sub-station armed with cutlasses on the morning of November 16 1996, and chopping the officers in the charge room. Henry was represented by attorney Larry Williams and Nedd by Wayne Sturge.
