St Augustine, Presentation Chaguanas stay unbeaten
THE “Green Machine” St Augustine and Presentation College,Chaguanas both remained atop the East and Central Zones respectively after contrasting victories in the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) yesterday. St Augustine got a narrow 2-1 victory over St George’s at Barataria while Presentation inflicted an 8-0 thrashing of Tabaquite in front of their home crowd at Chaguanas. A penalty from Matthew Ramirez and another from Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 striker Shane Calderon were all that mattered for St Augustine, with an item from Dominic Hutchinson of little consolation for the hosts. Another national Under-20 player Terryl Elwin netted a double as San Juan whipped “Dial Dynamos” Arima 2-0 at Bourg Mulatresse while Hillview jumped to third place after a 1-1 tie away to El Dorado.
Carlyle Mitchell put Hillview ahead before a late equaliser from Dwight Critchlow saw the “Blue Thunder” earn a share of the points. And debutants Valencia High School, now dubbed the “Diamond Cutters”, battled to an exciting 3-3 draw at home to Barataria courtesy of a hat-trick from Anderson Cadette, with Keston Samuel striking a pair and Jonathan Romain one for Barataria. Marvin Manswell notched a hat-trick for Presentation as they netted four goals in either half. Jesse Stewart added a double for the defending Central Zone champs while Trent Luckheed, Dion Lewis and Anthony O’Garro added one apiece.
Carapichaima remained in second spot after a 6-0 whipping of Chaguanas Senior at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, with Brent De Verteuil completing a hat-trick for the victors, with Julien Lando, Phillip Wellington and Keron Smith chipping in with a goal each. And Jaden Swift’s lone strike was not enough for the cellar-placed Union Claxton Bay, as they were trounced 4-1 against Marabella Junior Secondary at Marabella. Like St Augustine and Presentation, Naparima also kept their place atop the standings after a 1-1 draw against Vessigny in South Zone action at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. Kezi Lara was the goalscorer for Naps while Seon Thomas netted for Vessigny. Despite a goal from Ryan Lloyd, Pleasantville were edged 2-1 at home to Mayaro; Moruga were held to a 1-1 draw at home to St Benedict’s while Fyzabad earned their first victory of the season as they cruised past Princes Town 2-0 with goals from Bevon Bass in the 28th and Andre Quashie in the 43rd.
