Traffic headaches on Alcazar Street
THE EDITOR: Could the people in authority — the traffic commissioner, the Minister of Works, whomever — please make Alcazar Street in St Clair/Newtown a one-way street, accommodating only east-bound traffic? Earlier this year, Maraval Road, Rust Street and Herbert Street were all made one-way to alleviate congestion caused by people double-parking and dropping kids off to school. This was a commendable move as it helped ease the situation. I don’t mind the slight inconvenience of having to drive a little further to get to work, as the roads don’t get clogged as before. Unfortunately, Alcazar Street was left as a two-way. Quite frequently, traffic comes to a halt when two cars approach each other from opposite directions.
People routinely double park on Alcazar Street as it runs parallel to both TTT and First Citizens Bank and is also the home of a mas camp and other businesses. This allows only one car to pass. It is a major headache that could be avoided if it was a one-way. I hope that this is attended to soon. Also on Maraval Road there is a large vacant lot on that street with a sign saying ‘Future site of CUNA Caribbean Head Office,’ or words to that effect. I suggest the owners convert it into a parking lot while they are waiting to start construction. This way, they would make money and help ease the congestion on the road. They could even reserve spots for their own employees. It’s a win-win situation, folks. Give it some thought. It would be a public service, yield a small profit and make everyone happy.
