Intelligence led to WI ICC Trophy victory

VETERAN administrator Alloy Lequay said intelligence led West Indies to victory over  Engand in the recent ICC Champions Trophy final at The Oval in London on Saturday last. But the man who turned 80-years-old yesterday warned: “One cannot come to the conclusion that we have turned the corner as yet on our way to regaining the reputation of  being the World’s No. 1 in Cricket.” Lequay, current CEO of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board  and ex-president for the past 25 years, said two players with little-known international ability caused “us to win and we should be very happy for that when you consider that we were eight wickets down and still 100-plus runs to get. “What they did was to apply an intelligent approach to batting and with a sense of commitment, dedication and application they got the required runs and for that we should be thankful,” Lequay said.

“What we have to do is to be consistent and if we function with the same degree of dedication as we did in the ICC Tournament we should be well on the way to the top, remembering of course that we have to play Australia in the next few months and compete in a one-day series Down Under.” he added. Lequay praised Lara  and wondered “what the critics would have to say now that we entered as underdogs and emerged as overall champions,” He agreed with Lara that it was a victory for a despondent Caribbean people who suffered disastrous hurricanes and hoped that “we will recover from the disastrous effects soon.” Lequay said: Well done Lara and this young team for what you have done for this enthusiastic sport-loving Caribbean.”
