Central needs a High Court

THE EDITOR: I read with great interest the entire opening address of the Hon Chief Justice Sharma at the opening of the new law term. Newsday must be commended for publishing this address in its entirety. In terms of cost, and certainly for convenience, I suggest that a branch of the High Court be established in central Trinidad. Chaguanas or Crown can be an ideal location for this High Court of Judicature. The people of this area travel to Port-of-Spain and San Fernando when in need of the services of the High Court. In terms of population, development, especially in the area of commercial activity, and I want to suggest, in terms of High Court matters, central Trinidad is deserving of a branch of the High Court. There is also a well-established legal practice of innumerable attorneys in central Trinidad. Surely, they could make their voice heard in this matter. Their status, and that of central Trinidad, would be elevated with a Chaguanas/Couva branch of the High Court. This suggestion can be put on the developmental agenda of the Judiciary for the near future.
