Sugar Mike to defend Stewards Cup

SUGAR MIKE will defend his Stewards Cup crown later this year. Connections of last year’s “Horse of the Year” have forwarded their cheque at the initial subscription stage for the Caribbean sprint championship at Santa Rosa Park, Arima, on December 11. Trainer Grant Lourenco who has won most of the feature races this year is  likely to have a two-pronged attack in the prestigious sprint. The young trainer has also paid the $500 fee for rising star Twice Infallible to be eligible to compete in the dash. his three-year-old chestnut colt created a favourable impression earlier this month in the Diamond Stakes, in which he weakened close home and was passed by Sugar Mike and Top Of The Class. Bolstering the kitty which closed at  $8,000 after first subscriptions for the prestigious event, were three runners from trainer John O’Brien’s barn.

Subscriptions were paid for the O’Brien trio Cash Wager, Fabulous Risk and Smart And Lucky. Sagicor Independence Cup winner Miss Lover Lover who finished runner-up to Sugar Mike in last year’s edition, will again be in the line-up. Invincibility, which dented Sugar Mike’s reputation in the Santa Rosa Dash Handicap earlier this season is also among the list of 16 for which first subscriptions have been paid. The Junior Sammy-owned four-year-old, which raced under the care of Lourenco recently, has switched stables and is now being prepared by trainer Jack Debideen. A number of potential stars will be seen out in the Imported Juvenile Sprint. Dinner Silence, an impressive winner last raceday heads that list to travel 1200 metres on November 27. Second subscriptions for both events are due on October 25.
