TRINIDADIAN jurist Anthony Lucky has been appointed Chairman of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Code of Conduct and Discipli-nary Committee. He holds a similar position with the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board. Although he had been a member of the committee for the past six years, this is the first time that Justice Lucky will serve as chairman. Roger Braithwaite, Chief Executive officer of the WICB, informed Justice Lucky of his appointment by letter dated September 20. Justice Lucky’s appointment runs from July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2006. During his stint as a member of the committee, Justice Lucky sat on tribunals dealing with disciplinary matters affecting West Indies players Franklyn Rose, Tino Best, and Sulliman Benn.
The other members of the Disciplinary Committee are Professor Aubrey Bishop, of Guyana; Adrian Saunders, a Judge of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS); and former West Indies cricket captains Richie Richardson and Courtney Walsh. Contacted yesterday, Justice Lucky said it was an honour and privilege for him to serve West Indies cricket. “In my view, cricket has done us proud in the past, and it will do so in the future. Any small contribution I could make as chairman, I will certainly do so,” he added. Justice Lucky has had a distinguished career in the field of sports and law. He was a track star and cricketer at his alma mater, Presentation College, San Fernando.
After qualifying in the field of law in England, Justice Lucky was admitted to the Trinidad and Tobago Bar, and within a short time, became the youngest sitting magistrate in this country. He left the magistracy to take up an appointment as legal officer with Royal Bank. In 1987, he was appointed a High Court judge, sitting in major trials in both the criminal and civil jurisdictions. After 13 years on the bench, he was finally appointed to the Court of Appeal. But before he reached the retirement age of 65, Justice Lucky reached the pinnacle of his legal career. He was appointed a judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in September 2003. His stint with the International Tribunal runs to 2011. He has already sat on one international case involving Singapore and Malaysia.
