Please put back the signs

THE EDITOR: “N’ecrachez-pas sur la planche.” (No spitting on the floor). I saw these signs on Paris buses years before I came to Trinidad in 1977. Perhaps it is what they call an urban legend, but I hear that when Trinidad and Tobago got their independence, people tore down the signs on the streets that said “No Spitting,” and it was then that they began to spit with a vengeance. This would explain a lot. But who or whom are they “spiting?”  Maybe it’s time to put back the signs? “No garbage in drains, please,” “please use the bin provided” etc.
