Elias has missed the point
THE EDITOR: We are so pleased to see that the Prime Minister has done the honourable thing by declaring that a Commission of Inquiry will be launched to investigate the latest controversy to rock the PNM, involving alleged wrongdoing by Mr Emile Elias and Dr Rowley. Both of these gentlemen were very strong in their condemnation of the UNC and now they are both under investigation.
However, like all foregoing allegations of impropriety highlighted against members of the PNM and their cohorts, we have no doubt that this one will also be swept under the carpet. We are still awaiting a report from Mr Rahael the Minister of Health regarding the missing $107 million which were deducted from salaries of the NWRHA staff and never found its way to the Board of Inland Revenue. Mr Hugh Eastman, the Chairman of NWRHA simply declared that the board had no report, and that was that. Mary King had no choice but to take that and shut up. Furthermore, Mr Emile Elias seems to have missed the point since he keeps moaning that the papers were stolen from his office and must be returned.
It is immaterial whether the papers were stolen or not; the issue that is of more importance is the fact that materials and resources were sent from a Government building site to the personal housing site of Dr Rowley. The real or imagined paperwork attached to the movement of the material needs to be provided for scrutiny. We hope that this inquiry will get the same type of public viewing that was given to the inquiry into the airport project to allow viewers the chance to determine the validity and objectivity of the investigations.
