TT n-ballers in rampant mood
CASTRIES: The two Trinidadian clubs participating in the Helen of the West Netball Festival were in rampant mood on Tuesday when the competition continued at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Sports Complex. Defence Force were unrelenting against Turnford of England beating them 48-17, leading at all intervals 17-2, 22-9, 37-11. Goal-shoot Anastasia Wilson converted 35 of 41 attempts and goal-attack Diana Pierre ten from 14. Listra Zamora, also used as goal-attack, scored three from her five attempts. The Turnford team, still looking for their first victory of the festival, continued to shoot poorly with Louise Bartlett scoring just nine of 20 attempts and Rachel Jakeman eight from 21 attempts.
Defending champions Police Stars, of Trinidad and Tobago, had a comfortable ten goal margin at the end of their match against Vincentians Trac, winning 40-30. Police held the advantage throughout with leads of 11-8, 18-15 and 32-19 at the quarter time intervals. Donna Charles was the hot scorer for Police, sinking 25 of 33 attempts. Euphemia Huggins scored ten of 11 attempts and Beverley Hernandez, who played only in the second quarter, scored five of eight attempts. Goal-shoot Leana Lewis scored 16 of 24 attempts for Trac and goal-attack Geshell Peters had 14 from 24. In another match St Lucia’s Elite Strikers pulled off a scintillating 45-43 win over Maples of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). The St Lucians were ahead 13-9 at the end of the first quarter and by one goal, 22-21 at the end of the second.
Evening showers delayed play by approximately 40 minutes in the third quarter after which Elite stayed ahead 35-32. Maples dramatically went ahead by two for a brief period in the final quarter but Elite Strikers produced an inspired surge to regain the lead and held on to the end with their final goal coming with just ten seconds remaining in the encounter. Goal-shoot Deidra Mathurin scored 35 of 41 attempts and Glata Gabriel ten of 12 attempts. The experienced goal-shoot Skiddy Francis-Crick was accurate on the night for Maples, scoring 34 of 36 attempts. Goal-attack Thelma Foster scored seven of 11 attempts and Rose Clare Hall, who was used as goal attack in the first quarter only, scored two of four attempts. (CMC)
