Cops rescue couple trapped in car
Two police officers, one of whom was off duty, rescued a middle-aged couple whose car plunged into a flooded drain, between the Priority Bus Route and Eastern Main Road, Laventille yesterday. The shaken couple was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital by EHS ambulance and was reported to be in stable condition. Reports revealed that around 2 pm yesterday, Ag Cpl Dean Antoine of the Telecom and Transport Unit was driving his car east along the bus route when the couple’s car turned south from the Eastern Main Road to cross the PBR, causing the car driven by Antoine to crash into the rear of their car.
The car spun around several times and ended up in the drain which was filled with water following yesterday’s heavy rainfall. PC Serville of the Traffic Branch, who was assisting someone with a stalled car, saw the accident and rushed to the assistance of the couple trapped inside the car. Assisted by Ag Cpl Antoine, both officers jumped into the drain filled with murky water and plucked the couple out of the car which quickly filled with water. The rescued couple was high in praise for the quick response of the two officers.
PC Serville said yesterday all police officers must be prepared to go beyond the call of duty and he was happy to save the lives of two persons. He said as a police officer attached to Traffic Branch, he was always offering advice to motorists telling them the importance of safe driving and adhering to traffic regulations. He was high in praise of Ag Cpl Antoine who also assisted in rescuing the couple. A wrecker which arrived on the scene shortly after the accident pulled the car out of the drain. ACP Mobile Nazamul Hosein said he was happy the police officers assisted and rescued the couple. He commended the officers for their devotion.
