NAR: Principles of Fairness ‘a businessman party’

THE National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR), yesterday grudgingly offered its support to the recently launched Princi-ples of Fairness and labelled the group led by Ken Gordon  as a “businessman party in the wings.” The party made the statement in its 14th annual party conference document, released yesterday for its annual conference at Victoria Square, Port-of-Spain. In endorsing the aims of the group, the NAR said it also had initiatives to unite the country. The party said while Gordon’s ideals may be plausible, the  “group seems to be a businessman party in the wings.” The NAR also again called on Govern-ment to recognise the importance of July 27, by taking steps to have the nation remember the anniversary of the attempted coup annually.

The matter was contained in one of four resolutions expected to be passed yesterday by the party at the annual conference. The NAR said that the attempted coup on July 27, 1990 “rocked the foundation of society,” and the nation must never “forget this traumatic event and the matters that give rise to it.” The NAR also called on Government to implement fully the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act No 21 of 1990, as the first step that is required in the development of Local Government. It said the meaningful reform and development of Local Government is fundamental in promoting the participation of the citizens at large in the decision-making process. The party accused Government of having a history of attempting to emasculate the power of Local Government bodies. It claimed to be the only party which, when in central Government, sought to reform Local Government in a meaningful way.
