Pension scheme reform necessary
THE EDITOR: It is imperative for the government to undertake reform of the pension scheme because the current system is seriously flawed. I think it is unfair for individuals who have worked hard for all their lives and have acquired whatever little wealth they have to be unable to qualify for pension. Government pension is something which should be given to everyone regardless of whe-ther they are in possession of property or not. My parents have been working very hard for the past 30 years, they have paid all their taxes and they have saved all that they could to ensure that my siblings and I have a comfortable life.
However, when the time comes, if the system remains the way it is then my hardworking parents will not be entitled to any pension unless they sign over all their assets. This is ridiculous. Therefore on behalf of all those individuals who do not qualify for pension due to the fact they have assets, I want to call on the Minister of Social Delivery to revamp the system and ensure that all old age citizens are treated equally. In addition to which the government should consider lowering the qualification age to 60 years. Also I want to thank Senator Sadiq Baksh for pointing out this in Parliament.
