New politics doomed to failure
THE EDITOR: “Et TU, Brute”,or “even you Brutes” was the line uttered by Julius Caesar as he was being stabbed to death, having recognised his friend Brutes among the assassins. For those of us who know the story, it tells of the worst form of treachery . . .that of one thought of as a trusted, respected friend. After reading Mr Deyalsingh’s article in the Sunday Newsday, I realised that we “in real trouble here” in this country. I have always respected this gentleman, but in one paragraph he has managed to wipe clean my high esteem for his position in society and the respect I have for his ideas.
To me this is frightening — that a man could for all these years serve in our judicial system, imparting “justice” and hold such racist sentiments is unthinkable. I refuse to believe what I have read in the 12 and 13 paragraphs of his column “A new kind of politics” . . . after decades of racial discrinination . . . ?’ Et tu Mr Deyalsingh?” If Mr Deyalsingh needs the Prime Minister to enact a piece of legislation (Equal Opportunities Act) for him not to feel discriminated against, or not to discriminate, then God help us all. For his sake and others of the same ilk, we have been living here in harmony for decades despite racists bigots and their discrimination. The “big money” Indians who treat other Indian workers worse than slaves, employ underaged children and treat their dogs better than them, can the Equal Opportunities Act put them in jail where they rightfully belong?
Can “ a new politics founded on the idea that politics is spiritually demonstrated . . .” etc make the price of chicken cheaper in this country, where the poor in areas like “Bangladesh” in St Joseph had to bathe under a bridge on the bus route because they had no running water for years under the UNC. It took a racist PNM government to give them lights and water — a move that the UNC called corrupt because these poor Indian squatters couldn’t pay for connection and the “racist” PNM gave them their connection free. Listen the reason this country has not gone up in flames is because there “. . . are more good and decent people in this country” that makes it work. Disclipine,Tolerance and Production. I don’t want any part of any “New Politics” that starts off by categorising people as racist. It is doomed for failure. Much more unites us than divides us.
DANE CHRISTMAS
