SANTA CRUZ MURDER TRIAL STARTS

A CHAMPS  FLEURS  man yesterday went on trial for the July 15, 2001 murder of a Santa Cruz man. Calvin Andrews, 24, of Mt D’Or Road, Champs Fleurs is before Madame Justice Alice Yorke-Soo Hon at the Port-of-Spain Third Criminal Court charged with the murder of Kelwyn “Castro” Prince, of old Santa Cruz Main Road. In outlining the facts of the prosecution’s case, State attorney Debby Ann Bassaw told the 12 member jury and three alternates that on the fateful night Margaret Prince, the sister of the deceased, had hosted a party at the Silver Circle Recreation Club in Santa Cruz.

She said a group of young men entered the party and the accused, who was part of the group, made advances on one of the female guests, causing the hostess to reprimand him for his actions. Some time later, Bassaw said, there was an altercation outside, during which time Margaret reportedly saw Andrews take out a gun and fire a shot. Margaret saw her brother fall to the ground, Bassaw said.  The accused fled the scene. Andrews is being represented by attorneys Nathaniel King and Lemuel Murphy.
