Cops recover spent 9 mm shells
The leader of a Laventille gang was shot dead while asleep at his San Juan home early yesterday. His murder is the 230th for the year.
For the entire period last year, the murder toll was 172. Reports revealed that around 4.30 am yesterday, Darryn Pompey, 27, of Ridge Road in San Juan, was asleep with his wife Camille Jacob, 25, when he heard a knock. Pompey ignored the knocking and minutes later, two men dressed in dark clothing and armed with guns kicked down a door and entered the house. They fired several shots at Pompey striking him several times. The injured man was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital by officers of the Emergency Health Services.
He died around 5.50 am while undergoing emergency treatment. Police investigators told Newsday that Pompey was the leader of a gang from an area in Laventille known as “Canada.” Police officers led by Snr Supt Bishop visited the scene along with officers of the Crime Scenes Unit. A quantity of spent shells were recovered from the scene. Police officers told Newsday that Pompey was a suspect in several shooting deaths. He was also a suspect in several gang related shootings
Relatives of the dead man told Newsday that Pompey recently received death threats. They claimed that he was trying to live an honest life and called on the police to find his killers and bring them to justice. Cpl Ramjit of the Barataria Police Station is investigating. An autopsy will be carried out today to determine the cause of death.
