‘Tigers’, Vessigny in semi-finals

ST ANTHONY’S romped into the RBTT Intercol semi-finals with a 6-0 thumping of Fyzabad at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella yesterday. And joining them into the “semis” were Vessigny who edged Scarborough 2-1 in the earlier match played at the same venue. Akil de Freitas lashed home four goals for the “Tigers of Westmoorings,” while Kevon Nieves and Sutton got the others. Tsion Thomas gave Vessigny the lead after 30 minutes against the Tobago lads, and in a match of many errors, Chalil Commissiong gifted them an equaliser in the 51st with an own goal. But in the 57th minute, Timmy Hernandez fired in the winner to send the Vessigny supporters dancing in triumph.

De Freitas started the St Anthony’s rout in the 38th minute after “Fyzo” held their own in the early exchanges, and held firm for a 1-0 deficit at the half-time whistle. But De Freitas netted in the 46th, whipping in a first-time shot from a centre across goal. This signalled the opening of the floodgates, as De Freitas completed his hat-trick in the 48th when goalkeeper Adrian Toussaint fumbled substitute Sutton’s centre, he pounced and tapped into an unguarded net. Nieves scored the goal of the match in the 67th minute, dribbling three defenders and from an acute angle floated a shot into the goal past Toussaint.

Keron Sutton got the fifth after 77 minutes, slotting the ball into the net from close in, before De Freitas ended the rout with an 89th minute strike. St Anthony’s will now meet St Augustine, the mean “Green Machine” in one semi-final, while Vessigny face the winners of today’s match between Mucurapo and San Juan Secondary at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. This match was scheduled for Tuesday, but because of the World Cup qualifier between Trinidad and Tobago and St Vincent, it was brought forward to today.
