Stop noisy terrorism of animals

THE EDITOR: It is disheartening that the Minister of Finance did not elevate the importation costs of all forms of explosives. This refers specifically to those fireworks, scratch bombs and whatever else is used to celebrate Divali and New Year’s Day. During the period of October to January, dog-lovers (in fact animal lovers for this affects horses too) are very stressed out and traumatised over concerns of their pets’ well-being. This unnecessary display of noise pollution also affects the elderly, newborn and many, many others. I have no problem with the Hindus celebrating their festival, however it must not affect the peace of mind of the rest of the community.

It is ironic to note that the Maha Sabha clamours every chance it gets for equality and recognition of its members. Yet they show no regard for others (people/animals). Their scriptures teach that animals have a soul. Why then must their jubilation involve these terrifying explosions that have these animals scampering for their safety? I started to own pompeks ten years ago. Since then every Divali (and New Year’s Eve) I have been excessively burdened by sitting up most nights with them (dogs) when the explosions start. I have to hold my dogs and hug them for hours. I live with the fear that their scratching or pushing to get out of the kennels would cause their heads to stick between the wire/board. I also fear finding them dead in the morning. It is so bad that five years ago my vet started to prescribe tranquilisers or valium for me to administer. However my dogs are old now and those tablets are not risk-free. Almost every Hindu household uses these devices. My dogs experience this noise from a very close level (neighbours on both sides of our house).

These same nationals had a simple problem with the Trinity Cross but non-Hindus have to tolerate their noise pollution! Really, does every creed and race find an equal place? I think not. Recently I read Kenneth Assee’s article in Newsday’s section B Tuesday September 28, 2004 Page 11. I agree with him totally! The Maha Sabha and its members are a racist organisation and they use divisive strategies in the nation. Mr Sat Maharaj needs to lead by example and show tolerance (one of our national watchwords). He needs to teach his followers that respect is earned not forcefully obtained. You should show respect (even to the smallest child, rasta or not) and you shall get respect! Nobody brainwashes a Hindu into conversion as claimed. So what if a national sings a song containing the belief of another citizen? In like manner, would you like all christians to stop visiting the Nagar or promoting Divali (companies). Many Hindus take part in Easter, Carnival and Christmas. Why don’t you talk about your Hindu women then? Aren’t they associating with Christian history then (Baccuhus, Lent, Easter etc? My mother is a Hindu yet she buys hot cross buns and must have fish on Easter Monday! I am a Christian though. I don’t trespass against my mother as she does the same.

It all boils down to the ignorance of some people being not what they claim to be. All I ask is that these defenceless animals (God’s creatures regardless of what religion) be given their place on this earth. In fact don’t Hindus believe that some of their late relatives could be animals (reincarnation). Therefore please Hindus, don’t scare these animals to death or get them lost from their homes! I remember last year a little boy lost his dog. The dog ran away when explosions started on New Year’s Eve. The boy was in church. This message goes to anyone who can empathise with animal lovers such as myself. God bless your understanding and speedy response.
