So much for recognition TTEC

THE EDITOR: It was with some measure of disbelief and somewhat more disgust that I sat in the audience of the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission’s 50th Employee Recognition and Awards ceremony on Saturday October 16, of this year. Their ‘Gold Awards’ was clearly very well planned and I must admit very impressive in its production. But, to my dismay when the time came for the presentation of awards for 20 years long service, the Master of Ceremonies announced and repeated the name of one of the Commission’s Estate Policemen whom I know to be deceased for over six months.

When the officer failed to present himself for the award which I have no doubt he would have graciously accepted had he been able to, the MC then proceeded to ask the other officials around whether or not the awardee was present. What struck me was that no one in the Corporate Communications or Human Resources Departments was in a position to advise the presenter of the status of an employee who was to be ‘recognised’ for 20 years of long and distinguished service to this organisation. I sincerely hope that this is the last time we witness such a callous and tasteless display. I suppose one can be recognised without being missed.
