Tigers seek Intercol three-peat

THE “Westmoorings Tigers” St Anthony’s will be seeking a three-peat when they square off against surprise finalists Vessigny for the RBTT National Intercol crown at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo from 4.15 pm on Tuesday. In Thursday’s semifinal doubleheader at the Mucurapo venue, Vessigny upset the highly-fancied Mucurapo 1-0 while the Tigers needed kicks-from-the-penalty spot to eliminate Big 5 winners St Augustine 3-2 after both teams were deadlocked after fulltime and 20 minutes of extra time. Goalkeeper Kegan Davidson scored the winning kick for the Tigers after earlier strikes from midfielders Troy Thompson and captain Kevon Neaves while Elton John and Aaron Peters converted their efforts for the “Green Machine” St Augustine.

Both teams fought tooth-and-nail from the start, with St Augustine’s striker Lorenzo King missing from 10 metres out after Davidson failed to hold a second minute freekick by John. The Green Machine dominated proceedings, with Peters volleying his shot overbar in the 25th. The tide turned in St Anthony’s favour in the second half, as they were spurred on by the news that technical director Nigel Grovesnor had to be treated for dizziness during the half-time interval. But they were denied time and time again by the alert Green Machine’s defence, expertly marshalled by keeper Nigel Parris. St George’s qualified for the girls Intercol final against either holders Malick or Arima Senior Comprehensive, which will be held on Tuesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 2.30 pm. The St George’s lasses edged Providence 1-0 in Thursday’s semi-final at St Anthony’s ground.
