None but Sugar Mike for ‘Horse of Year’
ALREADY Sugar Mike has staked strong claims for a repeat of “Horse of the Year” 2004. Many turfites believe it to be a foregone conclusion...the title is his. But should Bertwin “Mike” Samlalsingh’s American-bred five-year-old score a repeat victory in either the Steward Cup on December 11 or win the Gold Cup 17 days later, he will undoubtedly be the champion once again. And then guest speaker and top English racehorse trainer Richard Hannon will surely call the name Sugar Mike, “Horse of the Year.” There are very few challengers, closest being Royal Oak Derby winner Mucho Tempo. Sugar Mike is being cleverly handled by young trainer Grant Lourenco who gets him spot on for his races.
And it is to be admired the manner in which the son of Ponche/No Sugar is being raced — connections never in a rush to greedily start him. The manner in which Sugar Mike has destroyed his challengers in races gives the impression he would not be beaten in his forthcoming starts bar injury. Apart from his failed attempt at the Sandy Lane Gold Cup, this bay horse has won 12 of 16 career starts. So when it becomes time to celebrate the champions of 2004 at the Jetsam Awards, it is expected Samlalsingh and Lourenco will again step up to the rostrum to collect the “Horse of the Year” trophy.
Another title which is the champion jockey which again will be Brian Harding, while it is a close call for the trainers crown (winners) between John O’Brien and Maniram “Boboy” Maharaj. But Gary Laban seems headed to dethrone good friend Sheldon Rodrigo for the apprentice jockeys’ title. This awards ceremony is scheduled for January 21 at the ballroom at Trinidad Hilton. Meanwhile, the Trinidad and Tobago Racing Authority are calling on turfites to book their tickets for the ceremony early. It is to be noted, tables can be booked for parties of eight to 10 persons, with tickets costing $250 each. For bookings, turfites can contact Joanne 646-2450-51 or 642-0172.
