Sarwan lashes hurricane century

MIAMI: West Indies cricket vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan hit a hurricane century that steered a West Indies XI to a 128-run victory over a Lauderhill XI in a limited overs day/night match at Oakland Park on Saturday night. In the 30 overs-a-side match, organised by the City of Lauderhill to raise funds for victims of the recent hurricanes, the West Indies XI —  sent to bat —  powered to 286 for six off 30 overs on the back of Sarwan’s hundred. The Lauderhill XI could only muster 158 all out off 25.2 overs in reply.  Sarwan, playing his first match since he returned from England after participating in the ICC Champions Trophy tournament, hit 10 towering sixes and seven fours in his 102 before he retired.

The right-handed Guyanese linked up with Marlon Samuels after the West Indies team had slipped to 26 for two when Daren Ganga was dismissed for two via the LBW route, and Stuart Williams was bowled by Robert Bascus for 13. Samuels scored 46 before he was dismissed.  Shivnarine Chanderpaul (29) and former Windies captain Richie Richardson (16) also appeared for the Windies XI as Bascus bagged three for 38 in a tidy bowling performance. In reply the home team got a fine 74 from Ed Lewis but leg-spinner Chanderpaul (3-19) and off-spinner Samuels (2-37) ensured an emphatic win for the West Indies unit. The two teams met in a similar match again yesterday. (CMC)
