Tigers, Malick complete hat-trick
St Anthony’s College and Malick Senior Comprehensive completed a hat-trick of victories respectively in the e boys and girls divisions of the RBTT Intercol final yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. The “Westmoorings Tigers” cruised past surprise finalists Vessigny 5-0 while Malick pipped St George’s 1-0 in the earlier fixture with a strike from Afiya Castle. St Anthony’s started the rout when midfielder Troy Thompson buried his third minute penalty past Vessigny’s goalkeeper Kona Modeste after striker Johnathan Glen was brought down by Curtan Hendy. Khalil Commissiong, who was the goalscorer in Vessigny’s shock 1-0 win over tournament favourites Mucurapo in the semifinals, was involved in two crucial moments for the Southerners.
In the 11th, his right-side corner found the head of Timmy Hernandez but the effort was acrobatically saved by St Anthony’s goalie Kegan Davidson. Three minutes later, Commissiong’s freekick was met by striker Tsion Thomas but his feeble attempt was blocked by Davidson. Vessigny were to rue those errors when, in the 21st minute, St Anthony’s captain Kevon Neaves fed striker Daniel Highly a through ball and his attempt was cleared to the path of Akil De Freitas who tapped into the open net. A minute later, Hernandez had a 35-metre left-footed blast which was tipped overbar by Davidson. But St Anthony’s extended their lead in the 28th when winger Hans Rogers collected a chip by Neaves on the left and delicately lobbed the ball over the advancing Modeste.
Midfielder Kwesi Thomas, who replaced an injured Glen at halftime, collected a long ball by Rogers in the 52nd but shot straight at Modeste. However, in the 58th, Modeste failed to hold a stinging drive by Neaves and the ball trickled over the goal-line. Neaves, who troubled the crowded Vessigny defence from start to finish, thundered his 40-metre effort inches overbar in the 68th but the shut-out ended in stoppage time. After a goal-bound Yohance Marshall (who returned from a severe leg injury to replace Highly in the 75th) was pulled by Hernandez, Thompson drilled his low freekick under the dive of Modeste. The “Tigers” completed the formalities without defender Andre Sebro, who was sent off by referee Noel Bynoe in the 88th for his second bookable offence.
