Nelly — best woman cricketer
TRINIDAD and Tobago vice-captain Nelly Williams has walked away with the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Cricket Board (TTWCB) 2004 “Player of the Year” accolade. The TTWCB held their annual awards ceremony on Saturday at the Upper Pavilion of the Queen’s Park Cricket Club, Port-of-Spain a month after the 108-year-old club allowed women to become members. During the recent season, Williams accumulated a total of 641 runs with the bat and was also contracted with Lancashire County and Sheffield United in England.
Williams was among “Five Players of the Year” announced at the ceremony, the other four were West Indies representatives — all-rounder Envis Williams, 16-year-old spinner Alisa Mohammed and all-rounder Jade Chadee, as well as former West Indies player Erica George. Three Trinidad and Tobago Under-23 players also came up for special mention. Moruga resident Marissa Aguillera, who earned selection to the West Indies Under-23 team, was voted as the “Most Disciplined Player”; 17-year-old Kirbyina Alexander was the “Most Improved Player”; while 13-year-old Gaitri Seetahal was adjudged the “Most Promising Player.” And special awards were presented to legendary sportswoman Marjorie John, administrator Babsie Figueroa and life member of the West Indies Women’s Cricket Federation, Jean Carmino.
