Met Office issues rainy weather caution

THE MET Office is advising that some periods of rainfall will continue today, as cloudy conditions and rainfall associated with the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) will continue to exist over Trinidad. Meteorologist Shakeer Baig told Newsday the rainfall which began on Sunday night was caused by an active  ITCZ. He said the heavier rainfall would have been experienced over Trinidad, while Tobago would have received the occasional showers. Baig said the rainfall was expected to cease by last night, but the cloudy conditions were expected to linger into the night.

he said there is expected “to be a break-up in the overcast conditions by today, however some periods of rainfall are still possible as the cloudy area associated with the ITCZ will still exist over Trinidad.” He acknowledged that there were some showers on Saturday, but the episodic rainfall began on Sunday. A flood bulletin issued by the Met Office yesterday at noon said the rainfall, torrential at times, mainly over Trinidad, resulted in rainfall accumulation exceeding 40 mm at Piarco. The bulletin warned that because of the waterlogged ground, river basins, such as those at Caroni and Caparo, could overflow, and advised residents to take the necessary precautions.
