Sugar Mike defends Trintrac crown

Sugar Mike will defend his sprint crown from the central posting in the Trintrac Stewards Cup, feature race on Saturday on the Arima Race Club Day 36 card at Santa Rosa Park. The Grant Lourenco-trained six-year-old will defend his title in the 1200 metres sprint from “the five hole” with regular partner Brian Harding aboard in the Grade One event dubbed the sprint championship of the Southern Caribbean. This position was pulled for the son of Ponche/No Sugar by his young trainer at the draw for the speed contest held yesterday at Level Two of the Grand Stand of the racing facility in Arima. Lourenco goes into the $100,000 contest with a two-pronged attack.

His other representative, Twice Infallible, will be partnered by Tyrone Harding, who has been plying his trade at Woodbine Racecourse in Canada. At the function George Bernard, Chairman of Trintrac Limited, said it was a pleasure to sponsor such a prestigious event and said he hopes it lives up to expectations and provides great entertainment for punters. He said it was the first venture of its kind by his company, the former Trinidad Tractors Company Limited, and is looking forward to a lasting relationship with the ARC. President of the ARC, Gerrard Ferreira, said he was elated to attract such a young progressive company to their fold. He said Trintrac are agents for heavy and light machinery, the types used at the racing plant and was happy to form a relationship with them.

The former Mayor of San Fernando said the card of nine races promises to be exciting, and pointed out that the Trintrac Stewards Cup, which holds the spotlight, will determine the speediest horse in the country. Invincibility, the other runner in the contest to hold Graded status drew lane seven for the speed battle. The Junior Sammy-owned colt which joined trainer Jack Debideen’s barn earlier this year will have the competent Ricardo Jadoo in his irons. Miss Lover Lover, which finished runner-up in the event last year will try to go one better from Gate Eight. The two grey’s in Saturday’s line-up — Lit D’Amour and Ghost Meadow —  will race from post positions one and six respectively, and the lightly fancied Rebel Music from the extreme position in the ten-strong contest.
