Tobago a paradise again
THE EDITOR: Please allow me some space in your paper to say a big thank you to our law enforcement services. At times, we have been very critical of them but we must also praise them when it’s due. I have noted that over the last four months the kidnappings in TT have decreased dramatically. This could only be due to the swift action and efficiency of our law enforcers. My wife and I live in Carnbee, Tobago, and over the last two years there has been a high spate of crime in our area, house burglary in particular. Some women were victims of rape, some were even raped and assaulted in their homes. There was also a high level of beach crimes committed against tourists which led to some curtailing their holiday.
Tobago was fast becoming a frightening place to live in. Residents demonstrated on the streets, neighbourhood watch committees were formed, groups signed petitions and handed them to government officials. Even today there is a volunteer committee still in existence which was set up to counsel rape victims. What we have now noticed is a high level of police presence patrolling our streets and neighbourhoods which gives us a tremendous feeling of comfort. Once again, I believe that the efficiency and swift action of our policemen/women (law enforcers) helped to stem the crime wave which we were experiencing.
Tobago is once again becoming the paradise it once was. When liming, crime is not the main and only topic we talk about as we once did. I am now going to sleep knowing that I will wake up and find my wife peacefully snoring in my ears and all of my household items intact. I am now thinking of removing my burglar bars which I recently installed and using them to build a big cage to house our white collar criminals and paedophiles!! I am not implying that Tobago is crime free, as all over the world crime is on the increase.
