Christmas sales slow in PoS
Do not expect to see a mad rush in the city of Port-of-Spain during this Christmas season, at least not yet. Because although Christmas usually brings shoppers to the city looking for bargains, this year will not be known for phenomenal sales. In fact, the sales numbers seem to be increasing outside of Port-of-Spain. This was Downtown Owners and Merchants’ Association (DOMA) President Gregory Aboud’s cited when asked about commercial activity this season. Aboud said there were reports of strong sales in “suburban malls.”
Store owners in Port-of-Spain should not panic just yet, however, as the DOMA president added that there was a “marginal increase and slight improvement” in sales in the capital. Aboud said that while there were “difficulties in November,” with the spate of robberies, the police and the Ministry of National Security were making efforts to curb the situation. It is due to these efforts that consumers are slowly but surely returning to Port-of-Spain, as Aboud said there has been a “good response” from consumers after November, and anticipated that the confidence shoppers once had in coming to Port-of-Spain would return.
