In defence of the cross

THE EDITOR: Please allow me a space in your widely read newspaper to enlighten a Dr Waffie Mohammed from Claxton Bay on his letter ‘‘Jesus never carried his cross,’’ in your newspaper Page 12 of December 6. First, it seems that recently the Trinity Cross has become taboo in the world at large but more especially in our beloved country of Trinidad and Tobago. The fact that the Trinity has essentially meant the three persons of the Trinity a Christian symbol, that is — The Father, Son and Holy Spirit, can never be changed because the Order of Trinidad (and Tobago) to what we wanted it changed to, only means that Trinity means Trinidad and vice versa. But I change gears.

Our brother Dr Mohammed’s inane statement that in John 19.17 ‘‘and he bearing his cross went forth” etc, whom does ‘‘he’’ refer to. Simon Cyrene? Was he there at that moment? The ‘‘he’’ meant Jesus obviously, since after falling three times and the Jews seeing that he was to expire before reaching Calvary, forced Simon of Cyrene to carry the cross, because they wanted him (Jesus) to die on the cross, not on the way. You see Doctor, we worship Jesus as the God man, the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity you so obviously abhor, not a Messenger as your Mohammed was. “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” Hear ye him, a voice from heaven was heard to say when John was baptising him (Jesus) in the Jordan. Have a Merry Christmas. Remember BC means Before Christ, and AD after the death (of Christ) the period in which the world now exists.
